Description
Genuine Detroit Diesel OEM 23516918 fuel pump check valve for Series 50 and Series 60 engines (11.1L, 12.7L, 14.0L). Spring-loaded one-way valve sits between the fuel pump and the return line and holds prime in the cylinder-head fuel galleries when the engine is shut off — the part you replace when a Series 60 cranks fine warm but turns into an extended-cranking start cold. Replaces PAI 645052 and Interstate-McBee A-23516918.
Signs You Need a New Fuel Check Valve
- Hard starting or extended cranking, especially after sitting overnight
- Fuel system loses prime after engine shutdown
- Air in fuel system causing rough running or stalling
- Fuel filter bowl level drops after engine is turned off
- Engine starts fine warm but struggles when cold

23516918 vs 23516993 — Which Do I Need?
Detroit Diesel ships two fuel check valve part numbers; they differ on the male thread:
- 23516918: 3/8 in Female x 3/4 in -16 Male Pipe (this part)
- 23516993: 3/8 in Female x 5/8 in -18 Male Pipe
Verify your existing valve or fuel-line fitting thread size before ordering. Some Series 60 installations locate the check valve in the return line near the fuel tank rather than on the back of the head — check both before deciding the valve is the cause of a no-start.
Verify your engine serial number and fuel system configuration before ordering. Use a fuel-rated thread sealant on installation; prime the system and check for leaks before cranking.
